On June 3 and 4, the citywide event “Science on Tap” took place. Researchers from DESY and the University of Hamburg offered entertaining insights into the world of science in bars and pubs across Hamburg.
Jörg Teschner (CRC 1624 Spokesperson) explained just how predictable the world actually is. In his talk, he stressed: Even if we had an ultimate “Theory of Everything”, we'd still need to learn how to compute its predictions. High-end mathematics as developed in the CRC 1624 will be needed. That same evening, Timo Weigand (Spokesperson of the excellence cluster "Quantum Universe" and CRC 1624 PI) addressed another major question from theoretical physics: In his lecture, “How Many Strings Does the Universe Play On?”, he introduced to string theory.
Explaining why research in mathematics and physics matters is a key element of the CRC’s outreach program. Both lectures were devoted to themes that are also central to the CRC 1624’s research goals: While Jörg explained how mathematical structures such as integrability can help us to understand the mechanisms of quantum phenomena in detail, Timo presented string theory as a promising framework for a fundamental description of the world.
